Tuesday, September 5, 2017
• Demo – Chemical Bonding and Mixing: water and vegetable oil will be mixed and observed. Red food coloring will be added and observed. After a couple of minutes, rubbing alcohol will be added and more red food coloring and the results will be observed. The teacher will explain that water, food coloring, and rubbing alcohol have polar bonds, but vegetable oil has nonpolar bonds and discuss with the class.
• Lecture/Notes – stability in bonding, chemical formulas, and why atoms bond.
• Students will complete reinforcement 20-1 covering bonding stability and chemical formulas. The teacher will assist students individually.
• Students will work on the guided reading for chapter 20 with any remaining time.
Wednesday, September 6, 2017
• Bellringer: the students will complete the 20-1 Section Focus Transparency Activity: Picking Up the Pieces questions and copy the guiding questions for the lesson on the back. Students will share answers for the bellringer questions and answer the guiding questions during the lesson.
• Lecture/Notes: the types of chemical bonds formed (ionic, covalent, multiple, polar, nonpolar)
• Students will work in groups to complete reinforcement 20-2. The teacher will assist groups individually.
• Students will work independently to complete sections 1 and 2 on the note-taking worksheet to organize and outline the material from sections 20-1 and 20-2. The teacher will assist students individually
• Students will spend any extra time working on the guided reading for chapter 20.

• Bellringer: the students will complete the 20-2 Section Focus Transparency Activity: A Crystal Nature. Students will share answers.
• Lecture/Notes: Binary ionic compounds and writing formulas and names
• Guided practice: writing the formulas/names of ionic compounds given a periodic table, a list of special ions, and a list of common polyatomic ions
• Independent practice: students will work in groups writing the formulas/names of ionic compounds using the periodic table, special ions list, and polyatomic ions list. The teacher will assist groups individually.
• Students will work on the guided reading for chapter 20 with any remaining time.
Friday, September 8, 2017
• Bellringer: students will write ionic compound formulas/names. Students will share their answers and all student questions will be discussed
• Independent practice – students will work in groups to write the formulas/names of ionic compounds using the periodic table, special ion list, and polyatomic ions list. The teacher will assist students individually.
Monday, September 11, 2017
• Bellringer: students will write ionic compound formulas/names. Students will share their answers and all student questions will be discussed.
• Lecture/Notes: Hydrates and naming covalent compounds
• Guided practice: naming covalent compounds using a list of prefixes
• Independent practice – students will work in groups to name covalent compounds using the list of prefixes. The teacher will assist groups individually.
• Students will work independently to complete a review on writing ionic formulas, naming ionic compounds, and naming covalent compounds for a quiz tomorrow.
• Homework – reinforcement 20-3

• Quiz on writing formulas/naming compounds
• Students will complete the note-taking worksheet for chapter 20 while everyone finishes the quiz.
• Students will work in groups to complete the chapter 20 review. The teacher will assist groups individually
• Students will use any remaining time to complete the guided reading for chapter 20.
Wednesday, September 13, 2017
• Bellwork: Assessment Transparency Activity – Chemical Bonds. Students will copy a chemical compound naming/formula writing review on the back.
• Return and go over the answers to the quiz on naming/formula writing. Answer all student questions.
• Students will work independently to complete the review copied on the bellwork. The teacher will assist students individually. Students will share their answers and correct mistakes.
• Students will work in groups to complete the practice test for chapter 20. The teacher will assist groups individually.
Thursday, September 16, 2017
• Students will go over the answers to the practice test on chapter 20 and correct mistakes. All student questions will be answered.
• Review for the test on chapter 20 tomorrow.
• Students will work in groups to compete in the MindJogger review for points on the chapter test. The winning team will get 3 points added to their test scores.
Friday, September 17, 2017
• Bellwork: the student will study for the test for 10-15 minutes
• Guided reading for chapter 20 and the practice test for chapter 20 will be turned in.
• Test on chapter 20
• As students finish the test, they will begin on the guided reading for chapter 21. When all students are finished, they may work in groups.
