Mrs. Callender's Comp Math Syllabus

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to Algebra 1 and a refresher course, if needed, to prepare for Algebra 1. The topics covered will be solving and setting up equations, graphing and systems of numbers.

Objectives:

  1.       Explain why the sum or product of two rational numbers is rational; that the sum of a rational number and an irrational number is irrational; and that the product of a nonzero rational number and an irrational number is irrational. (N‐RN.3)
  2.       Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales. (A‐CED.2)
  3.       Prove that, given a system of two equations in two variables, replacing one equation by the sum of that equation and a multiple of the other produces a system with the same solutions.  (A‐REI.5)
  4.       Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables. (A‐REI.6)
  5.      Graph linear and quadratic functions and show intercepts, maxima, and minima. (F‐IF.7a)
  6.       Represent data with plots on the real number line (dot plots, histograms, and box plots). (S‐ID.1)

Attendance Policy:

Attendance will be determined as the year progresses.  Tardies will be anyone entering class after the tardy bell. Tardy slips will be turned in daily with the office assigning after school detention for tardies.

Communications:

Students may contact me through the inbox portion of Canvas with questions and problems.  Parents are also invited to use this as well or you may use my school email address.  Canvas will probably be the better option so that I can see exactly what you are referring to as I read the email.  Phone calls to the school will be given to me as a message to return the call at my earliest availability.

Electronic Devices:

No cell phones will be allowed when in class in person, unless approved by the teacher. Phones will be placed in the phone parking lot during all tests (in person).

Food and Drink Policy:

Students may have resealable beverages in class to be kept closed unless they are drinking. No canned drinks or open containers. Drinks need to stay off the desks.  No eating in class. The only exception will be when (if) we are required to eat lunch in the classroom, and only during the allotted time.

Classroom Expectations

  1. Students will come to class on time prepared and ready to learn. 2. Students will complete all assignments, including homework, by all deadlines. Make-up work is only accepted after an excused absence. It is your responsibility to see me for your work before or after school.                                                                                                                                                                                                  3. All students will be silent and respectful while other students ask questions or are speaking.                                      4. The teachers and students will work together for a respectful, safe classroom.                                                                   5. Participation in class discussions will enhance all students’ learning experiences.                                                           6. Students are expected to have all assigned practice completed; this may require some practice to be completed outside of the classroom.                                                                                                                                         7. Cell phones, iPods, mp3 players, and any other personal items are prohibited in class at any time.

Class Requirements

Students will be required to complete and pass daily work, quizzes, tests/exams, and homework. Students will also be required to complete work outside of class, participate meaningfully and respectfully in classroom discussions, maintain good attendance, have a respectful and positive attitude, and come to class ready to learn!

Methodology

A combination of lecture, class discussion, videos, cooperative learning, and problem-based learning will be used in this class. Grades will be determined by the satisfactory and timely completion of assignments.

Grading Scale:

This class will follow the current Brookhaven School District grading policy, which is as follows:

Grade Scale:               100 - 90 = A               89 – 80 = B          79 - 70 = C           69 – 60 = D          >60 = F

Percentages:              Major tests = 40%                   Daily/Class/Homework = 40%                     Exam = 20%

I am looking forward to working with each of you. Remember that you are starting with a clean slate on grades and behavior. Everyone starts out with a good record in my class so let’s keep that good record of grades and behavior.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Callender
